CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Washington ranked as the state most at risk for car break-ins in April with 47.10 incidents per 100,000 people—133% above the national average—based on a report that analyzed FBI crime data from April 2021, 2022 and 2023. FOX 13
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Earlier this month, Latinx students from Karshner Elementary, Aylen and Kalles Junior High, and Puyallup High School attended the first annual La Chispa Student Leadership District Conference at PHS to build leadership skills, embrace their culture, and support academic success. Teachers selected the students for the half-day bilingual event that featured role models and lessons on goal setting, team building — highlighting the sacrifices made by their families. - ➤ The Puyallup School District announced that Proposition 1 did not meet the 60% supermajority required, with only 58.47% approval and 19,063 of the 28,216 needed ballots, and will not be run again in 2025. The School Board has tasked its capacity task force to review potential closures at Spinning and Waller Road Elementary Schools if repair costs or safety issues continue—similar to a past decision regarding the high school library science building. - ➤ House Bill 1596—known as the BEAM Act—is headed to Gov. Ferguson’s desk today after strong bipartisan support followed a 2024 King County crash in Fairwood that killed four; if signed within 20 days, the law will require drivers with repeated violations to install intelligent speed assistance and take effect no later than January 1, 2029.
