COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Karshner Museum is hosting the 6th Annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on May 21 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.—the event offers $10 bowls crafted by students with all proceeds going to the Puyallup Food Bank. After the fundraiser ends, the Vesey/Munson Art Show will feature artwork by local junior high and high school students.  Puyallup School District

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In Pierce County, a 48-year-old man and a 21-year-old mother died in separate motorcycle crashes—raising safety concerns as warmer weather arrives.  FOX 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Karshner Museum Patio in Puyallup will host a free Summer Storytime Series for children ages nine and under on Thursday afternoons from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on June 26, July 3, July 17, July 31 and August 14—featuring read-aloud sessions, hands-on activities, and a free book at each session.  Puyallup School District
  • Earlier this month, the Emerald Ridge High School ASL team competed at the Washington State ASL-CTE Competition, finishing 4th overall and earning top individual honors. Seniors Sienna Rogers and Amelie Smolko placed first and second in the Individual Receptive Skills event + the team earned third in collaboration using all 26 ASL handshapes.  Puyallup School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An Irish woman—who has lived in Santa Cruz for 30 years and returned with her stepmother from Ireland—was detained at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma six days ago after customs questioned her about a dismissed drug conviction, and her hearing has not yet been set as an immigration attorney warns green card holders about increased travel risks.  FOX 13
  • Today, the Pierce County Council will vote at 3 p.m. on a resolution directing employees to follow the Keep Washington Working Act instead of using local funds for federal immigration enforcement—supporters say it protects taxpayers while some residents disagree.  KOMO
  • Pierce County Human Services has set up a housing priorities forum—posted April 28—inviting local residents to share concerns about housing and homelessness; their feedback will guide efforts to improve local services.  FOX 13
