ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Drone footage shows severe fire damage to the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad’s largest wooden trestle bridge — its steel rails twisted and spans collapsed after a human-caused fire was reported at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, and officials are working with engineers to plan rebuilding efforts.  KOMO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students from Rogers High School received statewide honors at the WA State Spring Fair for photography. Senior Bryce Lovett won a $1,500 arts scholarship while Sophomore Ramsey Zink earned first-place plus Grand Champion honors in a competitive field of hundreds.  Puyallup School District

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Bob Ferguson has a bill awaiting his signature that will raise littering fines from $50 to $125 for trash up to one cubic foot—an extra $93 fine will be applied for littering on state highways. If signed, the law will take effect on July 27, delay the increase in reusable plastic bag thickness from January 1, 2026 to January 1, 2028, and raise the bag tax from 8 cents to 12 cents for stores opting for thicker bags early.  KOMO
  • Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank criticized the council's resolution on immigration enforcement as unconstitutional—he said he will push the matter to the U.S. Supreme Court and has reached out to the federal government for support. The county council maintained its trust-building effort with immigrant communities and noted that his stance was not unexpected given his record.  KOMO
  • Michelle, a Filipino green card holder and mother of three detained in California after her visit to the Philippines, was released from ICE detention in Tacoma after a months-long legal battle+ advocates from Tanggol Migrante Network said their support allowed her to reunite with her daughter and access needed medical care.  FOX 13

  • The Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County launched a new mobile veterinary unit that supports pet health — offering spaying and neutering services to animals in the area.  FOX 13
