CRIME NEWS

  • Pierce County deputies locked down Parkland elementary school at 611 132nd St S after a 7-year-old fired a compressed air BB gun replica from a nearby home, shattering two windows and confiscating the weapon while no arrests were made.  KOMO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the Department of Social and Health Services will offer the SUN Bucks program to help families buy food for school-aged children during the summer. Eligible children will receive $120 per child + funds will be deposited on existing SUN Bucks cards in early June while new cards are mailed in mid-June, and families must apply by August 29 if not automatically enrolled.  Puyallup School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Pacific Whale Watch Association said that Big Mama—renowned for her role in humpback recovery—returned to the Salish Sea with the season's first whale calf after members saw the pair on Wednesday in Haro Strait near the US-Canadian border. The young calf stayed close to its mother, and more humpbacks are expected to feed in local waters soon.  KOMO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington state has introduced its first Smokey Bear license plate to raise funds for preventing human-caused wildfires. Governor Bob Ferguson signed SBB 5444 on Tuesday, and the plate will be sold starting November 1 with an initial fee of $40 and a $30 renewal fee — the money will support DNR wildfire prevention programs.  KOMO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Memorial Day Weekend will bring sunny skies and air temperatures in the 70s, but local lakes and rivers remain in the 50s. Residents are urged to wear life jackets and avoid swimming alone – even experienced swimmers risk cold water shock.  KOMO
