Good morning, Puyallup. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 13th of November.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Native American Heritage Month, the Future Native Teachers Initiative— a joint effort by Pierce College, UW-Tacoma and PSD—gave nearly 40 Native high school students an opportunity to observe classroom routines at Carson Elementary and learn how tribal language builds cultural pride. Local educators, including Nisqually and Puyallup descendant Lenissa Grover, explained that the program aims to grow Native educator representation in Washington classrooms.  Puyallup School District

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Washington State University's seven-year study shows wild bee species are thriving in overlooked spots such as an abandoned golf course and areas near airports—recording 118 species, including some never seen before. The study collected over 25,000 specimens from Puget Sound—indicating neglected urban spaces support richer bee communities than managed parks.  KOMO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown led to a sharp rise in demand at the Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County's pet pantry—its food distribution jumped from 10,000 to 15,000 pounds while visits doubled as families lost SNAP benefits and turned to the drive-thru service, held every Wednesday and Saturday. Donations remain crucial as the shelter works to keep pets with their families during this challenging time.  KOMO
