Bird flu is detected at a Pierce County commercial poultry facility

Bird flu reached a Pierce County commercial facility after October backyard cases

  1. 2022Washington begins reporting bird flu detections in wild and domestic birds.
  2. Oct. 2026Bird flu is confirmed in three backyard flocks in Yakima and Kittitas counties.
  3. Nov. 5Officials announce bird flu at a commercial poultry facility in Pierce County.

If you keep chickens, here's what to know. Bird flu has been detected at a commercial poultry facility in Pierce County, the first commercial detection in Washington this year. No human cases have been identified at the facility, and officials say the risk to the general public is low. The facility is under quarantine, eggs from infected birds will be destroyed, and chicken and eggs from other farms remain safe to eat.

The Washington State Department of Agriculture () isn't naming the farm, because state law protects information that could identify a farmer during an agricultural emergency. State Veterinarian Dr. Amber Itle urged flock owners to keep birds away from wild waterfowl and shared environments, including ponds. Tacoma-Pierce County health officer Dr. James "Jay" Miller said public health's main focus is preventing worker infections. Flock owners within 6 miles of a detection are in a .

Owners inside a zone are encouraged to report flock health using the state's online tool and check its surveillance map.

  • Sick Bird Hotline: 800-606-3056
  • Dead domestic birds: double-bag them, keep in a cooler with ice
  • Dead wild birds: don't touch; report to Fish and Wildlife online
  • Flock care: coops or covered runs, sealed feed, fewer visitors

Getting Around

Boeing Field tower repairs are expected to restrict flights for about a month

If you're flying out of Sea-Tac soon, check your flight status before you leave. Aircraft operations at King County International Airport- are expected to be restricted for about a month while crews repair the control tower's stormwater drainage system. Controllers began working from a temporary tower Wednesday, Nov. 4. Because the two airports share airspace, Sea-Tac arrivals could be reduced to between 32 and 38 per hour.

The airport patched the roof after controllers reported a leak, but water kept getting into the cab. A blocked or damaged section of drainage pipe sits inside the cab, and fixing it means opening the roof, so the cab must be vacated. Some arriving planes may be told to circle over downtown Bellevue while they wait to land.

Hey neighbors, I’ve been walking a sweet dog named wilo for 4 almost 5 years in the area of Summit and Fredrickson, I’ll be moving out of state soon.

“The owners and I are planning to meet with potential walkers, and we’d love to connect with someone reliable and kind. If you’re interested, please message me, and we’ll set up a quick meet to see if it’s a good fit for everyone. Wilo is a 7 year old female border collie she’s the most friendliest, sensitive, caring…”

The Wrap

Quick bit of South Sound history: DuPont, the city between Tacoma and Olympia, sits on land the Sequalitchew Nisqually have used for at least 5,700 years. Later came the Hudson's Bay Company, Weyerhaeuser, Intel, and Amazon, according to HistoryLink's DuPont history. Its population grew from roughly 600 to 10,000 in less than 30 years. That's one busy patch of Puget Sound.
